Service gratuity is a ONE-TIME payment and nothing follows it. Where qualifying service is LESS than ten years, service gratuity is calculated at a uniform rate of half a month's emoluments for every completed six-monthly period of service.जहाँ अर्हक सेवा दस वर्ष से कम हो, वहाँ सेवा उपदान की गणना सेवा की प्रत्येक पूर्ण छमाही अवधि के लिए आधे माह के परिलब्धियों की एकसमान दर से की जाती है।
Do not confuse SERVICE gratuity with RETIREMENT gratuity. Service gratuity replaces a pension below ten years; retirement gratuity is paid IN ADDITION to pension wherever qualifying service is five years or more.सेवा उपदान को सेवानिवृत्ति उपदान से न मिलाएँ। सेवा उपदान दस वर्ष से कम पर पेंशन का स्थान लेता है; सेवानिवृत्ति उपदान वहाँ पेंशन के अतिरिक्त दिया जाता है जहाँ अर्हक सेवा पाँच वर्ष या अधिक हो।

Ten years of qualifying service is therefore the dividing line — below it a service gratuity, at or above it a pension.इसलिए दस वर्ष की अर्हक सेवा विभाजक रेखा है — इससे कम पर सेवा उपदान, इस पर या इससे अधिक पर पेंशन।

Work an example. Eight years of qualifying service is sixteen completed six-monthly periods, so service gratuity is sixteen times half a month's emoluments — that is eight months' emoluments, paid once.एक उदाहरण देखें। आठ वर्ष की अर्हक सेवा सोलह पूर्ण छमाही अवधियाँ हैं, अतः सेवा उपदान आधे माह की परिलब्धियों का सोलह गुना — अर्थात् आठ माह की परिलब्धियाँ, एक बार में।
