A railway servant may retire voluntarily after a minimum qualifying service of 20 YEARS.
The grounds are PERSONAL or MEDICAL.
Both the guide and the departmental question bank give the same twenty years, so this is one figure you can answer without hesitation.
Count qualifying service, not total service. The two differ by leave without pay, suspension and the other deductions the pension chapter lists.रेल सेवक न्यूनतम 20 वर्ष की अर्हक सेवा के बाद स्वेच्छा से सेवानिवृत्त हो सकता है।

Voluntary retirement is taken by giving notice, and the two sources put the notice a little differently.
- The guide: a notice of THREE MONTHS in writing, or three months' pay and allowances in lieu of such notice
- The departmental question bank: THREE MONTHS for a permanent employee, and ONE MONTH for a temporary railway servant
- गाइड: तीन माह की लिखित सूचना, अथवा ऐसी सूचना के बदले तीन माह का वेतन और भत्ते
- विभागीय प्रश्न बैंक: स्थायी कर्मचारी के लिए तीन माह, और अस्थायी रेल सेवक के लिए एक माह

A notice of less than three months may also be accepted by the appointing authority in DESERVING CASES.
If you are pensionable and your shorter notice is accepted, it carries a specific condition.
You shall not apply for COMMUTATION of a part of your pension before the expiry of the period of notice of three months.
The question bank adds the office side of it. The competent authority can waive the notice period in consultation with the ASSOCIATE FINANCE.तीन माह से कम की सूचना भी नियुक्ति प्राधिकारी उचित मामलों में स्वीकार कर सकता है।

WHEN IT CANNOT BE ACCEPTEDयह कब स्वीकार नहीं हो सकती
A request for voluntary retirement CANNOT be accepted while the employee is on LEAVE WITHOUT PAY or on EXTRAORDINARY LEAVE.
The departmental question bank states it in that form.
So if you are away on extraordinary leave, you have to come back on duty before your notice can be taken.स्वैच्छिक सेवानिवृत्ति का अनुरोध तब स्वीकार नहीं किया जा सकता जब कर्मचारी अवैतनिक अवकाश या असाधारण अवकाश पर हो।
विभागीय प्रश्न बैंक इसे इसी रूप में रखता है।
अर्थात् आप असाधारण अवकाश पर हैं, तो आपकी सूचना लिए जाने से पहले आपको ड्यूटी पर लौटना होगा।

NO RE-EMPLOYMENT FOR TWO YEARSदो वर्ष तक पुनर्नियोजन नहीं
After taking voluntary retirement there is NO RE-EMPLOYMENT FOR 2 YEARS.
The question bank carries it as a flat condition of the scheme, with no exception attached to it.
So if you go at fifty-two, you cannot take a railway post again until you are fifty-four.स्वैच्छिक सेवानिवृत्ति लेने के बाद 2 वर्ष तक पुनर्नियोजन नहीं होता।
प्रश्न बैंक इसे योजना की एक सपाट शर्त के रूप में रखता है, उसके साथ कोई अपवाद नहीं जोड़ता।
अर्थात् आप बावन की आयु में जाएँ, तो चौवन के होने तक फिर रेलवे का पद नहीं ले सकते।
