WHAT AN OPERATING SYSTEM ISऑपरेटिंग सिस्टम क्या है
An operating system is an integrated set of programs that manages the resources and overall operations of your computer. It sits between the hardware and the application programs you use.
- PROCESSOR, MEMORY, INPUT/OUTPUT, FILE and JOB management
- Interpreting commands, and assigning compilers, assemblers and utilities to users
- Data security and integrity, the internal clock and the usage log
- Dumps, traces and error messages, and easy communication with you

MULTIPROGRAMMING, MULTIPROCESSING AND TIME SHARING
Three ways of running more than one program are asked against each other.
- MULTIPROGRAMMING: one CPU interleaves two or more programs held in memory; it executes one instruction at a time. A program is READY, RUNNING or BLOCKED
- MULTIPROCESSING: two or more CPUs execute programs at the same instant. It gives parallel processing, and a built-in backup if one CPU fails
- TIME SHARING: computer time is allotted to several users in turn. A user is ACTIVE, READY or WAITING
