THE FLAVOURS OF UNIX
Unix comes in several flavours, each from a different vendor or line.
- AIX from IBM; HP-UX from Hewlett-Packard; SOLARIS from Sun
- The two family lines are SYSTEM V from AT&T and BSD from Berkeley
- LINUX is a freely distributed Unix-like system; Red Hat, Ubuntu and SUSE are distributions

THE VI EDITORvi
vi works in MODES, and you switch between them.
- COMMAND MODE is where vi starts. Esc always returns you there
- i inserts before the cursor, a appends after it, and o opens a new line below
- x deletes a character; dd deletes a line; yy copies a line; p pastes it
- /word searches forward for word
- :w saves, :q quits, :wq saves and quits, and :q! quits without saving

SHELL PROGRAMMING
The SHELL reads your commands and runs them. A SHELL SCRIPT is a file of commands run together.
- The shells are sh, the Bourne shell; csh, the C shell; ksh, the Korn shell; and bash
- The first line, #!/bin/sh, names the shell; chmod +x makes the script executable
- $1 and $2 are the arguments, $# is their count, and $? is the last exit status
- if ... then ... fi tests a condition; for ... do ... done loops; case ... esac chooses
- A pipe, |, sends one command's output into the next command
- if ... then ... fi शर्त जाँचता है; for ... do ... done लूप चलाता है; case ... esac चुनता है

GREP AND AWKgrep और awk
- GREP prints the lines of a file that match a pattern
- grep -i ignores case; -v prints the lines that do NOT match; -c counts them; -n numbers them
- AWK processes text field by field, as PATTERN { ACTION } pairs
- In awk, $1 is the first field and $0 the whole line; NR is the record number, and NF the field count
- awk -F sets the field separator: awk -F: '{print $1}' /etc/passwd lists user names

USER MANAGEMENT AND SECURITY IN UNIX
- useradd creates a user, usermod changes one, userdel removes one; passwd sets the password
- /etc/passwd lists the accounts; /etc/shadow holds the encrypted passwords; /etc/group lists the groups
- ROOT is the superuser, who may do anything; su switches to another user
- Permissions are READ 4, WRITE 2 and EXECUTE 1, for the owner, the group and others
- chmod 755 gives the owner rwx, and the group and others r-x

USER MANAGEMENT IN WINDOWS
- A LOCAL account lives on one computer; a DOMAIN account lives in Active Directory and works across the network
- Windows creates the ADMINISTRATOR and GUEST accounts at installation
- You give rights to GROUPS, such as Administrators and Users, and place users in them
- Local users are managed in Computer Management; domain users in Active Directory Users and Computers
- NET USER lists and manages accounts from the command prompt
