PROCESSES IN UNIX
A PROCESS is an instance of an executing program. Each process has a unique PID, its process identifier.
  • The PROCESS CONTROL BLOCK is the data structure that stores information about a process
  • Each process has its own address space, open files, pending signals and signal handlers
  • The FORK system call creates a new process; the parent uses WAIT to learn that a child has ended
  • The PROGRAM COUNTER gives the address of the next instruction
  • Shell built-ins such as pwd and cd create no process
A process ends on a normal exit, on a fatal error, or when another process kills it. So you create a process with fork, and you identify it by its PID.

JOBS, DAEMONS AND DEADLOCK
  • You can run a command in the FOREGROUND or the BACKGROUND; by default it runs in the foreground
  • JOBS lists the status of jobs; FG brings a background job to the foreground; BG resumes it in the background
  • A DAEMON is a process that runs automatically, without user interaction. CRON is a daemon
  • A set of processes is in DEADLOCK when each is blocked and will stay blocked forever
  • A system that runs only one process at a time is a UNIPROGRAMMING system
So fg brings a job forward, and cron runs as a daemon.

PAGING, SWAPPING AND THE PAGING SPACE
  • PAGING divides memory into fixed-size PAGES, so a program need not sit in one block
  • A PAGE FAULT occurs when a page you need is not in RAM; it is fetched from disk
  • SWAPPING moves a whole process between RAM and disk
  • When memory is full, the LEAST RECENTLY USED page is usually replaced first
  • In AIX the disk area for paging is the PAGING SPACE; lsps shows it
An application of 300 MB on a 256 MB machine borrows the rest from the paging space. So constant paging is thrashing, and the cure is more RAM.

THE LOGICAL VOLUME MANAGER
The LVM of AIX builds LOGICAL VOLUMES on top of physical disks.
  • PHYSICAL VOLUMES, the disks, are grouped into a VOLUME GROUP
  • Each physical volume is cut into PHYSICAL PARTITIONS
  • LOGICAL VOLUMES are carved out of the volume group, and file systems sit on them
  • You can add a new disk easily, and grow a volume dynamically
  • A logical volume can be MIRRORED, and its space re-allocated
So the LVM lets you grow storage without a fixed limit.
