DATABASE AND DBMS
Your notes define the two terms the papers ask first.
- A DATABASE is a collection of inter-related, logically coherent data from which information can be drawn
- A DBMS, DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM, is the software that creates, stores, retrieves and updates it
- Three database models: HIERARCHICAL, NETWORK and RELATIONAL

THE RELATIONAL MODEL
E. F. CODD proposed the relational model in 1970, in Communications of the ACM. It stores your data in TABLES of rows and columns.
- A ROW is a TUPLE, also called a record
- A COLUMN is an ATTRIBUTE
- A DOMAIN is the set of values a column draws from

Normalisation arranges your data in tables to reduce REDUNDANCY and make updates efficient. Five normal forms exist, and most databases go to the second or third.
- FIRST NORMAL FORM: repeating groups removed, every row has the same number of columns
- SECOND NORMAL FORM: every attribute depends fully on the primary key
- THIRD NORMAL FORM: no TRANSITIVE dependency, where an attribute depends on another non-key attribute
